How to Request Permission for ASA Copyrighted Material
For permission to reprint journal articles published by the ASA in 2010 and later, please visit the individual journal website hosted by our publishing partner: https://journals.sagepub.com/asa. Click the appropriate journal cover, then the Journal Info tab, followed by Journal Permissions. For questions, email [email protected].
For journal articles published prior to 2010, requests for reprint permission should be emailed to [email protected].
Socius and the Journal of World-Systems Research are open access journals that use Creative Commons licensing instead of transfers of copyright. The copyright of all published articles remains with the author.
Requests to use material in volumes in the Rose Series in Sociology may be requested through the Copyright Clearance Center.
For other material published by the ASA, requests for reprint permission should be emailed to [email protected].
Coursepacks: Organizations compiling coursepacks that will be reproduced and sold on behalf of instructors or academic institutions should send their request to [email protected].
Permission of the ASA Is Not Required for the Following Requests
Reuse by Authors: Authors may reuse material from their own journal article without permission and without fee in any volume in which they are the sole author or editor. For additional information on author rights, see ASA’s Online Posting Policy.
Teaching and Research Purposes: The ASA allows reproduction of its material for teaching and research purposes without permission and without fee. This policy allows instructors and educational institutions to photocopy isolated articles for non-profit classroom or library reserve. Although ASA holds the copyright to all material published in its journals, this policy allows uses such as:
- Reproduction for classroom use distributed without fee
- Short-run research reports distributed without fee
- Use in unpublished dissertations (If the dissertation is published at a later date, permission will be required from ASA at that time.
Material published prior to 1964 is now in the public domain and may be used without permission of the ASA.
Short passages of 200 words or less are considered fair use and do not require permission of the ASA.
