Section and Community Grant Calls

Last Updated: March 17, 2026

A few ASA Sections and Communities offer annual grants and this page is a central hub for all of the calls that have been submitted.

Aging and the Life Course

Student Travel Grants

The ASA Section on Aging and the Life Course (SALC) invites applications for up to five (5) travel grants of $250 each to support graduate students who will be presenting research (including at roundtables) related to aging and/or the life course with respect to structural inequality, such as social, economic, or health disparities, at the 2026 ASA Annual Meeting. We strongly encourage applications from scholars who have been systemically disadvantaged, marginalized, or historically underrepresented in academia. Grantees will be recognized during the SALC section day and will have the opportunity to be matched with a SALC mentor based on their interests and preferences. Those who are not current section members will receive a complimentary one-year SALC membership. Recipients are required to attend the SALC business meeting, where they will be formally acknowledged, or in the case of a scheduling conflict and with advanced arrangement, the SALC mentoring reception.

To apply, please submit your CV, the paper or extended abstract you submitted to ASA, and a list of the sessions to which it was submitted. Materials should be sent to the SALC Section Chair, Dr. Marc A. Garcia, at [email protected] by May 15, 2026. Please direct any questions to the same email address.

Medical Sociology

Louise Johnson Scholar Travel Grant

The Medical Sociology Section will select a student to be the 2026 Louise Johnson Scholar. The nominee must be a student member of the ASA, a student member of the Section, and currently enrolled as a graduate student at the time the award nomination is submitted. The Louise Johnson Scholar fund was established in memory of Louise Johnson, a pioneering medical sociologist whose mentorship and scholarship we are pleased to honor. The fund was made possible by Sam Bloom of Mount Sinai School of Medicine, a former colleague of Louise Johnson. The Scholar will receive travel funds up to $500 to the annual ASA meetings. Selection will be based on academic merit and the quality of an accepted ASA paper related to medical sociology; papers with faculty co-authors are ineligible. To apply, please send: 1) a copy of your acceptance notification to present at the 2026 ASA meetings, 2) a copy of your paper, 3) your CV, and 4) a brief (i.e., no more than 2 pages) letter of recommendation from a professor who can write about your academic merit. Submissions should be sent via email to Dr. Emily Vasquez ([email protected]) with the subject line: 2026 Louise Johnson Scholar Nomination. Applications are due by April 30, 2026. The nominator and nominee must be current section members.

Korie Little Research Grant

The ASA Sociology of Religion Section solicits nominations for the 2026 Korie Little Research Grant. This award is named in honor of Korie Little, recognizing her work in strengthening our understanding of the critical role religion plays in the reproduction of race and racial hierarchies in addition to her service to our scholarly community as the first woman of color to head one of the major social science religion associations. This research grant honors her contributions to the field and encourages scholars to make similarly significant contributions. The research grants will go to scholars whose work focuses on underrepresented groups. Scholars from underrepresented groups such as Black, Indigenous, and People of Color (BIPOC) are encouraged to apply. Applicants must be members of the Sociology of Religion section. For the 2026 award, the award is $250. Grants will support research that underscores the critical role religion plays in the challenge and/or reproduction of race and racial hierarchies in the United States. Grants are intended to cover research expenses, travel, research assistance, and/or a stipend for the researcher’s own time. Research funds must be expended by September 1, 2026. Applicants must have a PhD or be currently enrolled in a PhD-granting program. Graduate students and early career scholars are strongly encouraged to apply. Applicants must also be a member of the ASA Sociology of Religion Section. Self-nominations will be accepted. Applicants must send their CV, project proposal (no more than two single-spaced pages), and a project budget to the entire committee (listed below), in one email message, no later than May 1, 2026 to be considered for the award.
