Call for Proposals
2027 ASA President-elect Alford A. Young, Jr. has selected the theme, “Realizing the Promise of Sociology in Turbulent Times,” a focus that reflects the important work happening across the discipline and provides a unifying thread woven throughout the 2027 ASA Annual Meeting.
The 2027 Program Committee is accepting proposals for the invited session component portion of the Annual Meeting program. The online portal opened for submissions on March 2, 2026. The submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. EST on April 6, 2026.
Members are encouraged to submit session proposals for the following invited session components of the program:
- Thematic Sessions explore the meeting theme. These sessions are broad in scope and endeavor to make the theme of the meeting come alive.
- Special Sessions focus on new areas of sociological work or other timely topics which may or may not relate to the theme. They generally address sociological issues, whether in research or its application, of importance to the discipline or of interest beyond.
- Regional Spotlight Sessions provide opportunities to look at issues surrounding the host site for the 2027 Annual Meeting, Chicago.
- Book Forums are designed to bring authors of recent books deemed to be important contributions to the discipline together with discussants chosen to provide different viewpoints. Books published during 2024-2026 are eligible for nomination.
Guidelines for Submitting Session Proposals
Thematic Sessions, Special Sessions, and Regional Spotlight Sessions Proposals must include:
- Working title for the session (15 words or less)
- Brief description of the substantive focus (250 words or less)
- Session Organizer(s)
- List of potential participants and/or paper titles.
Book Forum proposals must include:
- Title of Book
- Publisher and publication date
- Brief statement about the book’s importance to the discipline of sociology
- Session Organizer(s)
- List of authors and potential panelists
- Self-nominations are not accepted
Statement on Diversity
Much of the vitality of the ASA flows from its diverse membership. With this in mind, it is the policy of the ASA to include people of color, women, sociologists from small institutions or who work in government, business, and other applied settings, and international scholars in all of its programmatic activities and in the business of the Association.
Participation Policies
Individuals may not be listed on more than two sessions on the program. A participant is anyone listed as a presenting author, presider, discussant, panelist, moderator, leader, or any similar substantive role on the program. Session organizers are exempt from this policy. Participants who are accepted to more than two sessions must decide on which sessions to participate and inform the sessions organizers promptly.
How to Submit
All submissions must be made via the online portal. The online forms will guide you through the steps required to submit your proposal. The submission deadline is 11:59 p.m. Eastern on April 6, 2026.
1. Go to the online portal. Log in using your ASA username and password. with your ASA username and password.
2. Click on “Submit or Edit a Proposal” listed under the Submitter Menu.
3. Select the type of proposal you wish to submit and follow the online steps.
