Act Now to Block Proposed Student Visa Rule
Take action for international students by submitting a public comment on a proposed Department of Homeland Security rule! This new DHS rule threatens to eliminate Duration of Status for international students, forcing PhD students to pay costly annual renewal fees and experience extended wait times. Submit your public comment before 11:59 p.m. Eastern on September 29, 2025, and be sure to name Docket No. ICEB-2025-0001. A template for your public comment can be found here.
Meeting the Moment: How Sociological Research Can Inform Public Policy
Join the American Sociological Association on Tuesday, October 21, from 5:30-8:00 p.m. at the Johns Hopkins Bloomberg Center in Washington, DC., for a free, in-person conversation with Louise Seamster (University of Iowa) and Beth Pearson (US Senator Elizabeth Warren’s Chief of Staff) on how sociological research shapes public policy. Seamster’s work on racial and economic inequality directly informed Warren’s student debt forgiveness plan, while Pearson represents the pathway from sociology PhD to policy leadership. Together, they’ll explore how rigorous research translates into real-world change and effective governance. Networking begins at 5:30 p.m.; conversation starts at 6 p.m. Register by October 14.

2028 Annual Meeting Location Update
Two years ago, and on the heels of the COVID-19 pandemic, ASA made a decision to hold the 2028 Annual Meeting virtually. In August, the ASA Council revisited this decision. The Council considered member survey responses, virtual participation patterns in ASA programming, and data collected about the 2025 Virtual Mini Conference held in January. All this data revealed an overwhelming preference among members to engage with one another in person. The Council voted to rescind its previous decision.
The 2028 Annual Meeting will be held in-person. A location and venue will be announced soon.
Apply for an ASA Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant
ASA is accepting applications for the 2026 ASA Doctoral Dissertation Research Improvement Grant (ASA DDRIG). Up to 25 grants of $16,000 each will be awarded in support of theoretically grounded empirical investigations that advance understanding of fundamental social processes. Applicants who have completed their pre-dissertation requirements and are initiating or conducting empirical dissertation research focused on advancing knowledge in any sociological sub-field (regardless of method) may apply. Applications are due by 5:00 p.m. Eastern on November 3, 2025. Find out more here.
Apply to Be an ASA Journal Editor
The Journal of Health and Social Behavior and Sociological Theory invites applications for new editors! Terms officially begin January 1, 2027, but the editorial transition begins in summer 2026. Editorial terms are for a minimum of three years (until December 31, 2029), with possible reappointment of up to two additional years.
Journal editors have an opportunity to shape the intellectual landscape in meaningful ways and to facilitate the dissemination of knowledge. ASA encourages you to consider serving in this role. Applications are welcome for both sole editorships and co-editorships, regardless of institutional affiliation.

Applications are being reviewed now until the positions are filled. Read the complete call for editors here.
Call for New Program Reviewers and Consultants
ASA is seeking new Program Reviewers and Consultants (PRC)—experienced and highly respected teachers, scholars, and leaders who are available to serve as external reviewers, consultants, and mentors for sociology departments throughout the country.
