Committee on the Status of Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender, and Queer (LGBTQ) People in Sociology

Last Updated: July 29, 2024

The ASA Council established this committee and three other Status Committees to advise and guide the Association on the status in the discipline and profession of those groups that have experienced a pattern of discrimination in society. Every three years, Council reviews the work of these committees via a formal report and renews or retires them. Generally speaking, the four ASA Status Committees address educational, workplace, research, and visibility issues for each of the respective populations within the discipline of sociology and the ASA membership. Each Status Committee has flexibility in defining an agenda consistent with its mission. Historically, the four Status Committees have engaged in educational outreach efforts, conducted research on specific questions or problems, and proposed policy initiatives based on ASA member concerns.
