ASA on the Issues: Advocating for Our Discipline and Academic Freedom

ASA takes public positions on issues related to policy for which there is consensus in the sociological literature or related to matters concerning the well-being of the discipline and profession.

We have been actively advocating for the value of sociology following a decision in Florida to remove sociology from the general education core course options.  Among our activities, ASA leadership wrote an op-ed in the Tampa Bay Times, “Removing Sociology as a Florida Core Course Demonstrates the Danger of Politicizing Education,” and a piece in The Conversation, “What’s Sociology? A Sociologist Explains Why Florida’s College Students Should Get the Chance to Learn How Social Forces Affect Everyone’s Lives.”

We also wrote a statement on Academic Freedom in the Face of Global and National Crises. You can read about all our advocacy efforts here.
