Biology and Society
This year the Biology and Society section of the ASA is seeking to expand its complementary reach to methodologically oriented sections that might find interest in integrating biological theory, methods, or data into the ongoing research in their sections (e.g., population research or health research). To do so, we are hoping to recruit candidates that are excited and motivated to help with this mission.
We seek a chair-elect, who will serve as the main driver of motivating the section as it adapts to its new mission. The chair will work alongside the current chair to collaborate with other sections to co-host our annual reception, to co-host thematic sessions at the annual meeting of the ASA, to help design the section’s sessions at the annual meeting around emergent, important issues in the field, and will help bolster connections with and awareness of our section. The chair elect will likely be asked to serve as the election coordinator of the section as well, serving in an important role to recruit dedicated new potential leadership alongside the evolving mission of the section.
The chair-elect shall serve for one year, after which they will assume the more formal role of chair. The chair shall serve for one year, after which they will become past chair. All Section business will be handled by the chair, including planning the program for the Annual Meeting of the Association. The chair-elect will assist the chair with Annual Meeting planning and to consult with the chair on recruitment, publicity, and section-mission related plans.
We also seek 2 new members for our council. The council consists of six members each serving for three years, with two council seats being vacated each year. The chair, chair-elect, past-chair and the secretary-treasurer shall serve as voting members. Council members may be called up to help serve on awards committees but importantly will be actively called upon to help with the evolving mission of the section.
As a reminder, per ASA policies, ASA membership is required to appear on a ballot; candidates must also be a member of the Section; members may only serve in one Section or Community elected position at a time; and members may only appear on the ballot for one position across all ASA-wide, Section, or Community elections. If elected, ASA membership must be maintained or will be removed from office.

Organizations, Occupations, and Work
Chair-Elect Position
The purpose of the section on Organizations, Occupations, and Work (OOW) is to foster the development of these branches of sociology through the stimulation of research and the communication of knowledge. The section focuses on concepts and theories from the various social sciences as they apply to problems of organizations, occupational roles and the changing nature of work.
The OOW Chair-Elect joins the OOW Council and is primarily responsible for organizing the OOW Program at the annual ASA meeting. This task includes recruiting session organizers and ensuring the proper coordination of activities across sessions.
The position is part of a 3-year rotation. The Chair-Elect automatically becomes Chair in the year following election (year 2) and will then be responsible for leading the section. Besides chairing the OOW Council, this leadership entails overseeing the OOW committees, recruiting and appointing leaders of these committees, and communicating regularly (typically monthly) with all OOW members. Finally, in year 3, the former Chair becomes Past Chair and is primarily charged with chairing the OOW Nomination Committee. This committee solicits nominations for open OOW Council positions and presents candidates for each opening.
The Chair-Elect is an elected position for a term of 3 years, starting on September 1, 2026. There will be one open position and at least two candidates on the ballot.
ASA membership is required to appear on a ballot; members may only serve in one section or community elected position at a time; and members may only appear on the ballot for one position across all ASA-wide, section, or community elections. If elected, ASA membership must be maintained or the holder will be removed from office. Only those ASA members who are also members of the OOW section shall be eligible to serve on the Council.
For more details on this position or if you know someone who would be good for this position, please contact Michel Anteby at [email protected]
Secretary/Treasurer Position
The purpose of the section on Organizations, Occupations, and Work (OOW) is to foster the development of these branches of sociology through the stimulation of research and the communication of knowledge. The section focuses on concepts and theories from the various social sciences as they apply to problems of organizations, occupational roles and the changing nature of work.
The OOW Secretary/Treasurer joins the OOW Council and is primarily responsible for overseeing the OOW section budget and drafting the OOW section annual report. The Secretary/Treasurer also manages and recruits graduate students who run the OOW blog and email account. Finally, the Secretary/Treasurer is expected to attend the OOW Council and Business meeting at ASA and report out pertinent information and take minutes during these meetings. These duties allow the Secretary/Treasurer to connect frequently with OOW members, including the OOW chair and other council members.
The Secretary/Treasurer shall be elected for a term of three years, with a starting date on September 1, 2026.
