  • University of Utah. Assistant Professor of Human Development and Family Studies, a nine-month, tenure-track position in the Department of Family and Consumer Studies (FCS) at the University of Utah beginning August 15, 1999. Applicants should have a social science PhD and an interdisciplinary perspective on family relationships with teaching and research interests in diversity and/or family policy. Preference will be given to those candidates with a life-course and/or ecological perspective. The position carries a two-course teaching load per semester with one course each semester taught for FCS and one course each semester taught for the Department of Sociology.   • Vanderbilt University. The Department of Sociology invites applications for a rank open sociology faculty position, commencing August 1999. It is expected that the candidate will have expertise in the field of race and ethnic relations, preferably with emphasis in the sociology of education, medical sociology, or the sociology of organizations.   • Vanderbilt University. The College of Arts and Science invites applications and nominations for Director of the African-American Studies Program. The College seeks a distinguished senior scholar who will hold a tenured position in an appropriate department and who is expected to provide intellectual and academic leadership in attracting to the College a cluster of scholars with a shared research interest. This scholar will guide the College’s Program in the Study of African-Americans or Africans throughout the diaspora. The appointment will commence with the 1999-2000 academic year. Applicants must have a record of outstanding scholarship in an appropriate humanities or social science discipline and a record of effective teaching. The successful candidate will be expected to offer one or more courses in the African-American curriculum as well as appropriate courses in her/his department. Routine administrative duties for the African-American program will be the responsibility of an assistant director, but prior administrative experience is considered an asset.   • Vassar College. The Department of Sociology seeks applicants for a tenure track position beginning Fall 1999 at the rank of Assistant Professor. Areas of specialization are open, but we are particularly interested in candidates whose teaching and research interests deal with religious movements, cultural institutions, labor markets, and/or corporations, especially from a global perspective. Applicants should also be capable of teaching the Department’s Introductory course centered around the classical tradition in sociological theory.   • Washington State University. Assistant/Associate Professor, two tenure track positions at Washington State University, one at Pullman and one at our branch campus in Vancouver, WA, or possibly both in Pullman. Applicants must be able to teach undergraduate and graduate courses in sociology as well as conduct independent research leading to publication. Primary specialization for both positions is to be in studies of crime and deviance, with secondary areas open. PhD in Sociology or related field with extensive sociological training and demonstrated potential or accomplishment is required.   • Washington State University.   • Western Washington University. The Department of Sociology invites applications for an Assistant Professor/Lecturer appointment to begin in the Fall of 1999. Specialization in Race/Ethnicity/Minority Relations, with preference for candidates with ability to teach undergraduate statistics and/or research methods. The department seeks candidates who can demonstrate a promise of contributing to a strong undergraduate liberal arts instruction, including research collaboration with undergraduates, while also maintaining an active program of original scholarship. Participation in a small MA program is also expected. PhD is required by the time of appointment for the tenure track Assistant Professor position; advanced ABDs will be considered for a one year Lecturer position, with promotion to Assistant Professor upon completion of the degree during the first year of appointment. One of six public universities in the state, Western enrollment has recently expanded to over 10,000. The department maintains a demographic research laboratory, survey research center, and NSF-funded student computer lab. Cross-national and quantitative approaches are principal but not exclusive research emphases.   • Williams College. The Department of Anthropology & Sociology invites applications for an anticipated one-year visiting position in sociology beginning July 1, 1999. The department has a unique interdisciplinary focus that emphasizes qualitative work. Areas of inquiry are open, but the department has a special interest in theoretically informed and empirically grounded analyses of major social institutions. Therefore, fieldwork experience as well as broad theoretical and substantive interests are desirable for the position. The PhD should be in hand by the date of appointment.
