  • Harvard University anticipates filling one or more full-time positions as an Assistant Professor (nontenured) of Sociology, for a five-year term beginning Fall, 1999. Candidates specializing in any field of sociology are encouraged to apply. Duties include teaching undergraduate and graduate courses, individual work with students, and service on departmental committees. Both new and recent PhDs are invited to apply; candidates with PhD pending must provide evidence that they will have completed all requirements for the doctoral degree no later than June 15, 1999.   • University of Illinois-Chicago. The Department of Sociology invites applications for one or two positions as tenure track assistant professor effective August 1999. Exceptional candidates at the associate level may also be considered. The department currently offers specialized PhD programs in Health and Medicine; Work, Labor Markets and Organizations; Race, Ethnicity, and Gender; and International, Comparative, and Asian Societies.   • Indiana University-Bloomington invites applications for a junior level position at the rank of Assistant Professor. The area of specialization is open. We seek candidates who demonstrate extraordinary commitment to research and teaching.   • International Christian University. The Division of Social Sciences, International Christian University (Tokyo, Japan) anticipates an opening in its Sociology Department, subject to university approval, beginning April or September 1999. Rank is open. PhD or equivalent and Japanese language ability or willingness to learn are required. Areas sought are theory, methods, intro, and two of the following: political, work, ethnicity, gender, Japan studies, Asian studies, culture.   • Johns Hopkins University. The Department of Sociology invites applications for a tenure-track position at the rank of assistant professor, effective July 1, 1999. The Department seeks to strengthen its program in comparative cross-national research. Areas of substantive specialization are open, but we are especially interested in comparative studies of social inequality, social change, development, political sociology, and social structure and personality. A PhD in hand or to be completed before the time of appointment is required. Experience in teaching, research, and professional service should be commensurate with that expected in a research-intensive university in which there is a strong commitment to instruction at the undergraduate and graduate levels.   • University of Kentucky. A state-supported, tenure-track faculty position for an early to mid-career health psychologist, medical anthropologist, medical sociologist, epidemiologist, or other biobehaviorally-oriented behavioral scientist is available in the Department of Behavioral Science, College of Medicine, University of Kentucky. A completed doctorate is required, and postdoctoral experience is desirable. The Department is a basic science department of the College of Medicine and has a multidisciplinary faculty of 12. Research should emphasize biobehavioral dimensions of disease prevention, course, outcome, distribution, and/or treatment. Teaching may involve medical and other health professional students, and pre- and post-docs in the behavioral sciences supported by two NIH training programs. Special foci of interests at the University Medical Center include but are not limited to aging, cancer, cardiovascular disease, health services, neuroscience, substance abuse, and women’s health.   • Loyola University Chicago invites candidates to apply for a tenure-track appointment in Sociology at the rank of Assistant or Associate Professor with specialization in the sociology of religion; we may give particular attention to applicants whose research explores some aspect of the Catholic experience.   • University of Maryland-College Park. The Department of Sociology invites applications for a tenured level appointment at the rank of Associate or Full Professor. We are searching for an established scholar who can play a leading role in our graduate quantitative methods training program.   • University of Massachusetts-Amherst. The Department of Sociology and the Center for Public Policy and Administration invite applications for a tenure-track position in sociology at the Assistant Professor rank beginning Fall 1999. Candidates should have a strong interest in teaching and research in the area of public policy, and will be able to draw on the resources of the Policy Center. All substantive specializations will be considered, but we are particularly interested in criminology, social demography, family, poverty and inequality, as well as teaching skills in research methods and/or evaluation research.   • University of Miami. The Department of Sociology invites applications for two tenure-track positions at the Assistant Professor level beginning August 1999 (pending budgetary approval). Applicants for the first position should have expertise in race and ethnic relations. Specific areas of substantive concentration are open; however, we are especially interested in applicants who have research and teaching interests involving Latino populations. Applicants for the second position should have a specialty in the analysis of complex organizations; however, we are especially interested in applicants who analyze organizations/organizational behavior in the context of one of our three primary areas of PhD concentration-medical sociology, criminology, race/ethnic relations. The successful candidates are expected to play a role in teaching in both our undergraduate and graduate programs as well as sustain an active research agenda.   • University of Michigan. The Department of Sociology together with the Program in American Culture has a tenure track opening for a quantitatively oriented sociologist specializing in issues related to Latino populations. Among particular areas of interest are population-demography and economic sociology, but sociologists doing quantitative research on other aspects of the situation of Latinos in this country, including comparative studies of different Latino populations, will be seriously considered. Applicants must hold or anticipate receiving the doctorate or an equivalent degree by August 31, 1999. While the search is mainly at the assistant professor level, the position may be upgraded to the senior level for outstanding candidates who are at a more advanced stage in their careers. The main criteria for selection are the excellence of the candidate’s work, the extent to which it illuminates the situation of Latinos in American culture, and the proven or likely excellence of the candidate’s teaching.   • University of Minnesota. The Division of Health Services Research and Policy at the University of Minnesota School of Public Health seeks candidates for a faculty position focused on the application of health services research methods to medical effectiveness and outcomes research. This appointment will be at the assistant or associate professor tenure-track or tenure level, depending on the candidate’s qualifications. An earned doctoral degree in a field central to health services research methods (i.e., psychology, sociology, or economics, or health services research with an emphasis in one of those areas) is required. Applicants must have strong research methods skills and the demonstrated ability to work effectively in an interdisciplinary research unit. The successful candidate will be expected to develop and conduct high quality research related to medical outcomes, mentor graduate and postdoctoral students in health services research, and teach graduate level course work. Demonstrated ability to initiate and direct research projects as well as collaborate with others is required. The skills sought are directed toward data analysis and research design with special emphasis on measurement and survey design and sampling issues. The Division of Health Services Research and Policy is one of five divisions in the University of Minnesota School of Public Health. There are currently 38 students in those programs. Division faculty have an extensive research program with over 40 research projects totaling $28 million currently underway.   • University of Minnesota. The Department of Sociology seeks applicants with clear indications of research ability and scholarly productivity for a full-time faculty position open to all ranks. Hiring preference is for a candidate working in the area of family and life course (including the sociology of aging and gerontology); law; criminology; deviance; organization and work; political sociology and social movements; or stratification: race, class, and gender. All methodological approaches are welcome. Candidates must have a PhD and will be expected to participate in both the undergraduate and graduate curriculum and to maintain an active research agenda. Salary competitive; regular nine month faculty appointment as tenure-track or tenured faculty to begin September 1999.   • Mississippi State University. The Department of Sociology, Anthropology, and Social Work is seeking qualified applicants for an entry-level Assistant Professor, tenure track position in Sociology, beginning Fall 1998. PhD in Sociology preferred at time of appointment, but Criminology/Criminal Justice doctorates with Sociology backgrounds will also be considered. ABDs will be considered at the level of instructor. Primary area of desired teaching and research specialization in criminology/deviance/criminal justice. Secondary specialty open. Applicants with secondary specialization in rural crime or race/ethnic minority relations are especially encouraged to apply.   • University of Missouri-Columbia. The Department of Sociology anticipates the appointment of a tenure-track, assistant professor position beginning August 1999. We seek a scholar of classical and contemporary sociological theories. We particularly seek candidates with expertise in the sociology of knowledge and in theories that critically analyze the interrelations among knowledge, power, inequality, institutions, and/or culture. We are interested in candidates who will be inspiring teachers and who can demonstrate to undergraduate and graduate students from a variety of disciplines the importance of theory and sociological thinking in analyzing social policies and public issues. Candidates must have completed the PhD degree by August 1999.
