Sociology in Action: Hugh Mehan

Last Updated: February 14, 2018

Hugh Mehan, Emeritus Professor of Sociology at University of California-San Diego, works with Groundwork San Diego to develop its “EarthLab.”  ASA asked Mehan about that work:

What is the mission of Groundwork San Diego? The organization is an environmental enhancement non-profit organization.

Could you describe your involvement with the organization? I assist Groundwork with developing its “EarthLab,” a 4-acre open air climate action park devoted to hands-on and inquiry-based education for K-12 students and adult informal learning through experiential environmental literacy; participatory climate action through community engagement; and linking both to advances in new energy technology.

What sociological knowledge and/or skills do you use? I use my knowledge of research and evaluation techniques to help Groundwork prepare funding proposals; to design studies of students’ and teachers’ learning; I apply my knowledge of organizational change to assist Groundwork overcome obstacles to growth; I exploit my knowledge of UCSD to entice students and faculty to assist in this effort.

How did you connect with Groundwork San Diego? I had personal connections with the executive director of this environmentally-oriented non-profit organization.

How long has the project run? I have worked with them for four years; my connection with them is ongoing.

Is there anything else you would like to share about this work? Working with a desperately understaffed organization committed to social justice issues is incredibly challenging and rewarding.
