    The alumni of nine leading private schools are 94 times more likely to reach the most powerful elite positions in British society than those who attended any other school, according to a unique historical analysis of Who’s Who led by researchers at the London School of Economics and Political Science.

  2. ASA President Writes Letter in Defense of Jan Tomasz Gross

    ASA President Michèle Lamont recently wrote President Andrzej Duda, Chancellery of the President of the Republic of Poland criticizing a new Polish law that significantly harms academic freedom. The law punishes those who study Poland's past and reach a well researched conclusion that is opposite to the Polish government's narrative. 

    Lamont urges that no charges be filed against Professor Gross. Gross has written about Poles complicity in the persecution of Jews during WWII.

  3. ASA Signs on to Letters to Congress Regarding Spending Caps

    On February 6, ASA signed on to a letter from the Task Force on American Innovation—a broad nonpartisan coalition—that was sent to U.S. congressional leadership, regarding 302(b) allocation. These allocations establish the cap on spending for each of the appropriations bills. The letter's 95 undersigned businesses, scientific and engineering societies, and universities--each a fundamental part of the U.S.

  4. Sociological Insights for Development Policy

    The Sociology of Development Section announces a new policy brief series: Sociological Insights for Development Policy. The purpose of the series is not only to raise awareness of the thought-provoking research being done by members of the section, but also to strengthen engagement between scholars, policy makers and development practitioners. The long-term aim is to enhance sociology’s impact on development discourse and practice throughout the world. Sociological Insights for Development Policy publish short (2-page) briefs that are distilled from section members’ research.

  6. ASA Letter Regarding Gender Studies in Hungary

    The American Sociological Association sent a letter to Hungary’s State Secretary for Education imploring him to reject a draft decree from the Ministry of Human Resources and the Ministry of Justice that calls for the abolishment of Gender Studies programs. Read the letter here.

  7. In Case You Missed It: Webinar on Seeking Grants from Private Foundations

    Last month ASA offered an open access webinar, "Grant Seeking from Private Foundations: What Investigators Should Know," featuring program officers from three foundations that offer major funding for work in the social sciences: the Spencer Foundation, the William T. Grant Foundation, and the Russell Sage Foundation. In the webinar they described their current initiatives, their review processes, and provided concrete guidance on proposal preparation. Even if you missed the live webinar, you can still view the recording.  

  8. Proposals Invited for Five ASA Journal Editorships

    The ASA Committee on Publications encourages applications for the editorships of Contemporary Sociology, Journal of Health and Social Behavior, Socius, Sociological Methodology, and Teaching Sociology.

    The official terms for the new editors (or co-editors) will begin in January 2020, with the transition starting in summer 2019. Terms are for three years with the possibility of reappointment for for up to an additional two years.

  10. Letter Regarding Proposed Funding Cuts for Higher Education in Alaska

    A letter sent to government officials of Alaska by the ASA, along with 31 other professional societies, states "we express deep concern about Governor Dunleavy’s proposed funding cuts for higher education. While we understand that Alaska is currently facing financial constraints, a $134 million reduction in state support for the University of Alaska will undoubtedly have devastating consequences to the well-being of the state for generations to come....  A healthy local system ensures that many of the economic benefits of higher education remain local.
