  1. Funding: Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline

    The ASA invites submissions for the Fund for the Advancement of the Discipline (FAD) awards. Supported by the National Science Foundation and the ASA, the goal of this program is to nurture the development of scientific knowledge by funding small, groundbreaking research initiatives and other research activities such as conferences that will advance the discipline.

  2. ASA Harassment Working Group Formed

    Harassment—sexual, racial, and other forms—has been a pervasive issue in higher education and we often hear of such misconduct at professional meetings.  Council recently had a discussion about this very serious problem and decided to appoint a Harassment Working Group to identify steps ASA might consider taking to both prevent and respond to misconduct at our Annual Meeting. 

  3. Join the TRAILS Area Editors Team!

    ASA seeks sociologists to volunteer to serve as Area Editors for TRAILS: the Teaching Resources and Innovation Library for Sociology. Area Editors have a three-year terms starting January 1, 2018.  TRAILS Area Editors are responsible for working with the TRAILS Editor and potential authors to expand the range, quantity, and quality of teaching resources in TRAILS, as well as reviewing materials submitted to their subject area and making publication recommendations to the Editor.

  5. Share Your Story: Sociology Serving Organizations

    ASA knows that sociologists are doing important publicly engaged work, and we want to highlight some of these contributions to raise awareness of the value of sociological expertise. We are collecting profiles of sociology serving organizations. We are seeking people who have been actively engaged in pro bono projects with public sector or non-profit organizations for which sociological expertise has been used.   7. ASA Task Force on Contingent Faculty Issues Interim Report

    The ASA Task Force on Contingent Faculty has prepared an interim report, which can be found at www.asanet.org/about-asa/committees-and-task-forces/task-force-contingent-faculty. It garnered significant attention from the sociologists who attended a related session in Montréal as well as the interest of the press, including The Guardian and Inside Higher Ed.

  8. Federal Statistics Working Group

    Council is pleased to announce the formation of a Federal Statistics Working Group.  The charge is broad by design.  The group is asked to proactively and reactively address issues related to the continued collection and use of federal statistics.  This is an advocacy charge.  The group may identify relevant issues independently, and issues may be brought to the working group for consideration by the Council or the Executive Office.

  9. ASA Member-Get-A-Member Campaign a Success

    The 2017 ASA Member-Get-A-Member campaign was a success, with 76 current ASA members sponsoring 82 new members. Sponsors receive a $10 discount on 2018 member dues for each new member and are entered into a drawing to win a $250 Amazon gift certificate and other prizes.
