Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the 2020 ASA Annual Meeting in San Francisco has been cancelled. It is now clear that the global health crisis will not be resolved by August, and a large gathering of people from around the world represents an untenable health risk.
I would like to offer my deep gratitude to the 2020 Annual Meeting Program Committee, led by President Christine Williams, for its efforts over the last two years. This group, along with hundreds of committed session organizers, has worked tirelessly and creatively to develop a rich program addressing the theme “Power, Inequality, and Resistance at Work,” and we are committed to facilitating alternative approaches for productive collaboration around this important content.
If you are scheduled to participate in the meeting, we will be in touch in the next few weeks with options for virtual engagement. Once a full plan for virtual events is in place, we will share that plan broadly with the sociological community. We appreciate your patience in the meantime.
Your payment will be refunded in full within 60 days if you have already registered for the 2020 Annual Meeting. Payments made by credit card will be returned to the same card. If we are unable to successfully credit the card used in the original transaction, we will send a refund check made out in your name to the home address in your ASA record. If we do not have a home address for you, the check will be sent to your “key” address. To update the address(es) in your ASA record, log in to the ASA website at www.asanet.org. For those who paid by check, a refund check will be sent to the name and address on your check payment. If you have any questions about your refund, please send a message to [email protected].
Not having a 2020 Annual Meeting is a real loss to our discipline and to the thousands of sociologists who were planning to convene, but we are optimistic that we will collectively find new, productive forms of engagement during this period of physical distancing.
