2017 Guide to Graduate Departments of Sociology Now Available

Last Updated: October 6, 2022

The American Sociological Association is pleased to present the 2017 edition of the ASA Guide to Graduate Departments of Sociology. First published in 1965, the Guide can be used by a wide range of constituents for a variety of purposes—from graduate students considering job prospects to faculty advising undergraduates about graduate programs.

This edition includes 203 graduate departments, with 184 located in the United States. Of these departments, 140 offer a doctoral degree and 63 offer the master’s as the highest degree. Information was collected between December 2016 and February 2017.

There are several ways to search for information in the Guide aside from searching alphabetically by the name of the institution. First, there is an alphabetical listing of faculty.  Second, there is an alphabetical listing of PhD recipients from the past year. Finally, one can search for departments by primary areas of expertise.
