ASA on Levada Center in Russia

October 18, 2016

The American Sociological Association (ASA) along with the British Sociological Association and the Canadian Sociological Association sent a joint letter to the Ministry of Justice of the Russian Federation regarding a troubling situation with the Levada Center.

The Russian judiciary system has labeled the Levada Center a “foreign agent” based on the fact it receives some international funding.  In Russia, this label is synonymous with “spy” and “saboteur” and would make it nearly impossible for sociologists at Levada Center to continue their independent scientific polling activities. The Levada Center is now appealing the “foreign agent” label in court.  The Levada Center was founded by a sociologist, is currently directed by a sociologist, and conducts high quality sociological polling in Russia.
