The Employment Fair strives to create an inclusive environment for scholars at all stages of their career to explore current and upcoming employment opportunities in sociology. All institutions with an interest in hiring sociologists are welcome to participate in the 2018 Employment Fair. A current open position(s) is not required to participate.

Win One of Three Department Affiliate Memberships

Every department that registers for the 2018 Employment Fair will automatically be entered into a raffle to win one of three ASA Department Affiliate year-long memberships! (Valued up to $375.) Winners will be chosen after the Annual Meeting. The ASA Department Affiliate year runs August 1 through July 31.

Sunday, August 12 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Monday, August 13 9:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m.
Tuesday, August 14 9:00 a.m. - 12:00 p.m.


On Saturday, August 11, the Employment Fair will run from 11:00 a.m. - 4:00 p.m. Employers are asked to staff their booth for the duration of the Fair on Saturday. This day is intended to facilitate short, informal meetings between employers and job seekers. Job seekers will approach your booth to learn more about your institution and to express their interest in your available position. This time is not meant for one-on-one interviews or extended discussions with a single candidate. Employers are encouraged to speak with job seekers for a few minutes each to answer questions about their position(s) and their expectation of applicants. We strongly recommend that you present the position details to multiple job seekers at once.

Sunday, Monday, and Tuesday, August 12-14, have been reserved for employers to conduct individual interviews at their booths. This format gives employers the flexibility to schedule interviews at their convenience. There will be no time limits placed on the interviews. We encourage employers to both schedule interviews prior to arriving in Philadelphia, as well as reserve a few interview slots for any exceptional candidates that stop by your booth during the Employment Fair on Saturday.

Before the Meeting

Employers with a current open position are encouraged to list their position in the ASA Job Bank. Once a position is in the Job Bank, employers can search the candidate resume profiles submitted to the Job Bank.

To connect employers and job seekers prior to arriving in Philadelphia, job seekers who are ASA members or subscribe to the Job Bank will be able to indicate in their Job Bank Resume Listing whether they will be attending the 2018 Annual Meeting. Employers with a current listing in the Job Bank will be able to limit their search of resume listings to only individuals planning to attend the Annual Meeting. This option will be available on the Job Bank May 1-August 18, 2018. However, we do encourage employers to review all candidates on the Job Bank to not miss a potential future employee.


Employer fees must be paid before a booth will be reserved at the Employment Fair. Booths are assigned in the order registrations are received. ASA Department Affiliates receive a 25% discount on Employment Fair fees.

Booth Set Up

Booths will be 10’x10’ with one six-foot table and chairs. The booth will be semi-private with two curtain walls and two open sides. Employers are welcome to bring signage, displays, and handouts to have at the booth. Employers will be able to access their booth begining Saturday morning starting at 10:00 a.m. to set up their materials. Employers may use this time to connect with other employers participating in the Fair. There is no limit to the number of employer representatives that can participate in the Employment Fair. All employer representatives must be registered for the Annual Meeting.

Pre-Fair Meeting

At least one employer representative is asked to attend a pre-fair meeting at 10:30 a.m. on Saturday, August 11 in the Employment Fair space. The meeting will last approximately 15 minutes and will review the setup, fair protocol, and any additional questions employers may have once they are in the space.
