Department Affiliates Program

About Department Affiliates
The Department Affiliates Program provides a department-level link between academic institutions and the American Sociological Association. The Affiliate year runs from August 1st- July 31st of each year. Department Affiliates receive a broad range of benefits, including Chairlink--an electronic newsletter exclusively for department chairpersons--and advance notice of calls for papers, meetings, and funding opportunities. Joining ASA as a Department Affiliate advances the role of departments and the discipline more generally.
Individual social capital is a well-understood and long-used concept in sociology. The related concept of organizational capital suggests that an organization, distinct from the individuals within it, has resources and networks that predict outcomes. In organizations with strong social capital, there is better knowledge sharing, higher levels of trust in relationships (both within and between organizations), more common frames of reference, a larger proportion of shared goals, lower turnover rates, and greater organizational continuity. Departments can build their organizational capital by becoming an ASA Department Affiliate.

Benefits

CHAIRLINK: An electronic newsletter exclusively for department chairs. ASA staff shift through national publications on higher education, science policy, and the discipline, and screen web resources to find the most relevant and useful items, which are then put into a concise and easily accessible electronic newsletter. Chairlink helps department chairs stay current on trends, in touch with the newest resources, and responsive to pressing issues of public and professional concern within the discipline. Chairlink also provides advance notice of calls for papers, meeting, and funding notices.
GUIDE TO GRADUATE DEPARTMENTS:
A free copy of the newest annual guide, every year. Lists over 250 departments, including program profiles with information such as degrees offered, tuition, proportion of graduate students receiving financial aid, number of graduate students, and PhDs awarded in the past year, as well as indexing by special programs and areas of expertise.

Department Affiliates receive an annual packet with a selection of new publications in these areas.
