Testimonials

Participants of the Honors Program find that they gain an invaluable experience by attending the ASA Annual Meetings. Whether they are attending plenary sessions or networking with other students and sociologists, these students consider the Annual Meetings to be a highlight in their educational and start of their professional careers. Here are what some students had to say about their own experiences:

“I was able to attend two very memorable plenary sessions in which I was able to hear two women speak whom I now consider heroines: Ruth Bader Ginsberg, Associate Justice of the U.S. Supreme Court, and Gloria Steinem, feminist, activist and darn-good speaker. These amazing women came to speak on the importance of research done by sociologists and the ways in which women have progressed. Needless to say, these women’s speeches were two of my highlights…I could not have been more pleased with my time in Montréal this summer. It was enjoyable, educational and extremely fruitful.”

"Professor Scott Sernau, Indiana University-South Bend, in his book Critical Choices, talks of another great divide when he states, 'One of the most difficult tasks facing a sociology instructor is to help students grasp the many links between the private world of their own experience and the social world they inhabit.' By attending the 101st ASA Annual Meeting and participating in its 2006 Honors Program, I crossed that divide. It was an invaluable experience that I will encourage other eager sociology students to seek."
