Portrait of Carla B. HoweryThis small grants program supports teaching projects that advance the Scholarship of Teaching and Learning (SoTL) within the discipline of sociology.  The Carnegie Foundation has defined SoTL as "problem posing about an issue of teaching or learning, study of the problem through methods appropriate to the disciplinary epistemologies, application of results to practice, communication of results, self-reflection, and peer review" (Cambridge 2001).  Howery Teaching Enhancement Grants can support an individual, a program, a department, or a committee of a state/regional association.

Contributions to TEF in Honor of Carla Howery

Carla B. Howery, who served ASA for 25 years as Director of Academic and Professional Affairs (and later as Deputy Executive Officer), died March 31, 2009.  The ASA Council renamed the Teaching Enhancement Fund (TEF) in honor of Howery on May 14, 2009.  This action was meant to "recognize and honor Carla Beth Howery for the work in which she took the most professional and personal pride--enhancing the discipline of sociology through practical ways of nourishing the fruits of great teaching and by recognizing those who labor in its vineyards at all levels" (ASA Council Resolution).

Carla Beth Howery's life and her contributions to sociology and ASA were featured in a Footnotes article celebrating her 25th year at ASA, as well as in her obituary.  Carla's family asked that, in lieu of flowers or cards, contributions could be made to Christ Lutheran Church (5101 16th Street NW, Washington, DC 20011) or to the ASA Teaching Enhancement Fund, established during Carla's tenure at ASA.
