Amos Henry Hawley, demographer and teacher at the University of Michigan for thirty years. In 1966, he moved to the Sociology Department of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill from which he retired in 1976 as Kenan Professor of Sociology with specialization in demography. Amos H. Hawley served as the 69th President of the American Sociological Association. His Presidential Address, entitled "Cumulative Change in Theory and in History," was delivered at the Association's 1978 Annual Meeting in San Francisco, and was later published in the December 1978 issue of the American Sociological Review (ASR Vol 43 No 6, pp 787-796).
