ASA Department Portal. A single location where Department Affiliates can access archives of webinars, Chairs Conference materials, back issues of Chairlink, as well as the Directory of Members, Directory of Departments, Teaching Sociology feature articles, a curated set of Footnotes articles related to department-level concerns, helpful information to assist departments embarking on self-studies, program review, and more. New benefits will be added to this new centralized information portal as they become available.
ASA Undergraduate Student Newsletter. Undergraduate students in Department Affiliates will be eligible to receive this brand new quarterly newsletter. The newsletter will be timed to lead students to each newly released, fully-accessible online issue of Contexts magazine. Each issue will also guide students to media coverage of research published in ASA journals, including news items posted in newspapers and media outlets across the country and around the world, as well as advice and notices about professional opportunities relevant to undergraduates, interesting facts about sociology and sociologists, and more.
Chairlink. From September 2014 until June of 2015, chairs in Department Affiliate departments will receive a monthly issue of Chairlink, a sociology-specific newsletter designed to help department chairs stay up to date on key events in higher education and anticipate and effectively respond to the challenges of department leadership. Chairlink will be distributed during the first week of every month.
Department Affiliate Webinars. Faculty and students in Department Affiliates will have access to ten exclusive webinars covering topics related to department leadership and management, professional development, and teaching and learning in sociology. The preliminary agenda is already online and includes topics such as “Strategic Planning and Planning Strategically: Positioning Sociology Departments for the New Normal”, “Conflict Management for Department Chairs” and “Making Large Classes Feel Small: Building Dynamic Interactions to Support Active Learning with Classes of 50-500.” For the first time, a special evening webinar will be offered especially for undergraduate students entitled “Building Your Career with a Bachelor’s Degree in Sociology. You might consider planning a pizza party for your students around this great webinar event!
Graduate Department Benefits. Free Membership for Graduate Students. First year graduate students in Affiliate departments receive a FREE 1 year ASA membership, starting in January 2015. In addition, Department Affiliates receive a 30% discount on listings in the ASA Guide to Graduate Departments.
Opportunity for Increased Department Visibility. Department Affiliate Departments will be listed on the ASA website, with active links to the departments’ own websites. The ASA website receives more than 25,000 unique page views per month, so being included on the ASA Department Affiliates list represents a remarkable opportunity to increase the national visibility of your department.
TRAILS. Faculty in Department Affiliates receive up to 50% discounts on subscriptions to TRAILS (the ASA Teaching Resources and Innovations Library for Sociology). TRAILS is a fully-searchable online interactive repository of thousands of sociological teaching materials that can be downloaded and adapted for immediate class use. TRAILS also provides an opportunity for faculty to submit their own innovative teaching resources for peer review and possible publication.
Guide to Graduate Departments. All Department Affiliates receive the newest edition of the Guide to Graduate Departments of Sociology, free of charge.
And there’s more: In addition, Footnotes, ASA’s monthly newsletter covering important news about the Association and the discipline, is sent directly to the department nine times a year. Department Affiliates also receive discounts on the annual Department Chairs Conference and on Job Bank postings.
