ASA Section Listservs
Each ASA section receives
two listserv lists to facilitate its communication with members.
Announcement lists are used by Section Officers to Announce upcoming section news and other relevant news, while
Discussion lists are available to facilitate intellectual exchange and networking between section members. Announcement listservs are for section members only.
Members may not add themselves to an Announcement listserv. ASA Staff updates listserv members during the first week of each month. Hence, members who joined on the 6th or 7th may have to wait several weeks before receiving their first message from the section listserv.
Should you have any difficulty with the listserv, please feel free to contact
sections@asanet.org.
Digests
Digests package a week's worth of listserv messages into a single
article. They are useful for reducing inbox clutter or if you don't have
much time to read messages everyday. Digests work for both Announcement and Discussion Listservs. If you want to set up digests on multiple lists, you will have to send commands for each one separately.
- Send a message to listserv@listserv.asanet.org
- Leave the subject area blank
- In the body of the message delete all signatures another other text (this confuses the listserv)
- Type (or copy) the following message set LISTNAME NOHTML MIME DIGEST
- Replace LISTNAME with the name of the listserv
you want to change. For example if your listserv is
"SAMPLE-ANNOUNCE@LISTSERV.ASANET.ORG" then just use SAMPLE-ANNOUNCE. Do
not add the @LISTSERV.ASANET.ORG part- that will confuse the system and
will cause it to ignore your requests.
- Send the message
- You will receive an e-mail confirmation.
Announcement Listservs:
- All Section members are automatically subscribed to the Section’s Announcement Listserv.
- Members may not add themselves to announcement listservs. If you are a section member and have not been added to a list, please write to sections@asanet.org.
- New members are added to announcement listservs at the end of each month.
- Section Chair, Chair-Elect, and Secretary-Treasurer are default authorized “announcers” for announcement listservs.
- Authorized announcers may be changed.
To stop receiving messages from an Announcement listserv:
- Send a message to listserv@listserv.asanet.org
- Leave the subject field blank
- In the body of the message delete all signatures another other text (this confuses the listserv)
- Type (or copy) the following message set LISTNAME Nomail
- Replace LISTNAME with the name of the listserv you want to change. For
example if your listserv is "SAMPLE@LISTSERV.ASANET.ORG" then
just use SAMPLE. Do not add the @LISTSERV.ASANET.ORG part- that
will confuse the system and will cause it to ignore your requests.
- Send the message
- You will receive an e-mail confirmation

Discussion Listservs:
- Membership in Discussion Listserv is voluntary (i.e., discussion listserv is not automatically populated with e-mail addresses of section members).
To subscribe to a discussion listserv:
- Send a message to listserv@listserv.asanet.org
- Leave the subject field blank
- In the body of the message delete all signatures another other text (this confuses the listserv)
- In the body of the message type subscribe LISTNAME
- Replace LISTNAME with the name of the listserv you want to change. For
example if your listserv is "SAMPLE@LISTSERV.ASANET.ORG" then
just use SAMPLE. Do not add the @LISTSERV.ASANET.ORG part- that
will confuse the system and will cause it to ignore your requests.
- Send the message
- You will receive an e-mail confirmation with further instructions.
To unsubscribe from a discussion listserv:
- Send a message to listserv@listserv.asanet.org
- Leave the subject field blank
- In the body of the message delete all signatures another other text (this confuses the listserv)
- In the body of the message type unsubscribe LISTNAME

Other Useful CommandsThese new functions will work for both discussion and announcement listservs:
- Send a message to listserv@listserv.asanet.org
- Leave the subject area blank
- In the body of the message delete all signatures another other text (this confuses the listserv)
- Type (or copy) the following message set LISTNAME COMMAND
- Replace LISTNAME with the name of the listserv you want to change. For example if your listserv is "SAMPLE-ANNOUNCE@LISTSERV.ASANET.ORG" then just use SAMPLE-ANNOUNCE. Do not add the @LISTSERV.ASANET.ORG part- that will confuse the system and will cause it to ignore your requests.
- Replace COMMAND with one of the following commands.
NOHTML MIME DIGEST- Digest tells the list to send you messages once a week on Thursdays. All messages on the list will be saved for you until that time. The NOHTML MIME option tells the system to send your messages as text but to maintain some basic formatting so that messages are legible.
Nodigest - Use this command if you want to go back to receiving messages as they are sent.
Nomail - Nomail tells the list to stop sending you messages. Use this if you would rather not receive any more messages from an Announcement list.
Mail - Tells the list to resume sending your messages as they are sent.
- Send the message
- You will receive an e-mail confirmation

Listserv Etiquette By joining and using
ASA's listservs, you agree that you have read and will follow the rules and
guidelines set for peer discussion groups. You also agree to reserve list
discussions for topics best suited to the medium. For answers to basic
questions on, membership or sections issues please send questions to
membership@asanet.org or
sections@asanet.org. For any other
requests please use this website’s contact form.
As with any community, there are guidelines governing
behavior on the listservs. For instance, violating antitrust regulations,
libeling others, selling, and marketing are not permissible. Please take a
moment to acquaint yourself with these important guidelines. If you have
questions, contact
sections@asanet.org. ASA reserves the right to suspend or
terminate listserv access on all lists for members who violate these rules.
Discussion Listserv Etiquette
- Include
a signature tag on all messages. Include your name, affiliation, location,
and e-mail address.
- State
concisely and clearly the specific topic of the comments in the subject
line. Include only the relevant portions of the original message in your
reply, delete any header information, and put your response before the
original posting.
- Only
send a message to the entire list when it contains information that
everyone can benefit from.
- Send
messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me,
too" to individuals--not to the entire list. Do this by using your
e-mail application's forwarding option and typing in or cutting and
pasting in the e-mail address of the individual to whom you want to
respond.
- Do not
send administrative messages, such as remove me from the list, through the
listserv. Instead, please send requests to sections@asanet.org or follow the
instructions on this page.
- Warn
other list subscribers of lengthy messages either in the subject line or at
the beginning of the message body with a line that says "Long
Message."
Announcement Listserv Etiquette
- Announcement
Listservs are restricted to members of sections or special committees
only. Please do not request to join an announcement listserv unless you
are a member of the listserv’s section or committee.
- Include
a signature tag on all messages. Include your name, affiliation, location,
and e-mail address.
- State
concisely and clearly the specific topic of the comments in the subject
line.
- Send
messages such as "thanks for the information" or "me,
too" to individuals--not to the entire list. Do this by using your
e-mail application's forwarding option and typing in or cutting and
pasting in the e-mail address of the individual to whom you want to respond.
- Do not send administrative messages, such as
remove me from the list, through the listserv. Instead, please send requests to
sections@asanet.org.
- Announcement listservs are updated during the
first week of each month. If you are a new or renewing section member, please
wait until after that time to inquire about your inclusion on the listserv.
