Betty Friedan: An Appreciation
Betty Friedan, the leader of the
second wave of the women’s movement,
died in Washington, DC, February 4, on
her 85th birthday. A journalist and author,
Friedan founded the National Organization
for Women (NOW) and in addition
to her political and organizational
activities, participated in and directed
many university-based programs
bringing together scholars and policy
makers.

Canada and Québec: An Update
Renowned Canadian sociologist
Marshall McLuhan once wrote, “Canada
is the only country in the world that
knows how to live without identity,”
and claims that having an identity crisis
is part of being Canadian. The 2002
Booker Prize winner, Yann Martel,
referred to today’s Canada as the
“greatest hotel on earth.”
