ASA Executive Officer
The American Sociological Association (ASA) invites applications and nominations for a new Executive Officer to lead the Association. The Executive Officer is the chief executive officer of the ASA and is responsible for advancing its goals and mission consonant with the policies of the ASA Council. This position is key to advancing sociology as a discipline and profession, addressing the objectives of the organization and its members, and promoting the visibility of sociology and of ASA. Working closely with ASA officers, ASA Council, the Committee on the Executive Office and Budget, and the Publications Committee, the Executive Officer fosters effective planning, communication, and implementation of activities to achieve the goals of the Association.
All of the programs and operations of the ASA fall under the aegis of the Executive Officer. The Executive Officer formulates plans for the Association to accomplish its objectives; has charge of the business and financial functions of the Association, including its publishing functions; and is responsible for all aspects of staffing and personnel decisions. Responsibilities of the Executive Officer include providing leadership and management, guidance in policy directions, and representation in external relations and public affairs. The Executive Officer is a non-voting member of ASA Council and serves ex officio on other committees and task forces of the Association necessary to accomplish its work.
The successful candidate will have a PhD in sociology or a related field; substantial experience in administration (e.g., academic, research, government, or non-profit); excellent leadership and management skills; breadth of knowledge and a penchant for developing sociology or related social sciences as fields; a proven record of resource and program development; a demonstrated capacity to think creatively and strategically; and a deep appreciation of the Associationís commitment to excellence and inclusiveness in research and teaching in all areas of sociology.
Founded in 1905, the American Sociological Association has approximately 13,000 members and an annual budget of $4.3 million. The Executive Office is located in Washington, DC, with 25 staff members.
The appointment is for one five-year term effective May 1, 2002 or as soon thereafter as is feasible. The term is renewable at the discretion of ASA Council. Salary is commensurate with qualifications and experience of the successful candidate. A competitive benefits package is provided.
