TEACHING ETHICS THROUGHOUT THE CURRICULUM

Case 28. Businesses that Involve Students

Situation

Chloe Lawson owns a number of apartment complexes adjacent to the university. A number of students rent from Professor Lawson and occasionally some of these students will also be in her classes. This semester Marie Jacowski and Michael Kim are student-tenants. Jacowski always pays her rent late. Kim frequently has rowdy weekend "beer blasts" and has neighbors calling police.

Questions

  1. Is Professor Lawson's ownership of student housing adjacent to her campus appropriate?
  2. What are the implications for the student-teacher relationship in this situation where the these student-tenants represent problems for Professor Lawson?
  3. If such outside investments are not be prohibited, what avenues for eliminating the  potential problems associated with having student-tenants can be taken?
