There are several ways in which undergraduate and graduate students can jumpstart their careers by becoming involved with the American Sociological Association (ASA). ASA offers many opportunities to students, such as networking, meeting leaders in the field, gaining access to cutting-edge information, etc.

Advance Your Career and Gain Peer Recognition with:

  • ASA Sections. ASA's 42 special-interest sections include, for example, medical sociology, social psychology, and sex & gender. Sections provide information through newsletters, web sites, listservs, and sessions at the ASA Annual Meeting. They provide great opportunities to network, meet leaders in the field, learn about current section research, as well as learn about grant opportunities, book announcements, job openings, and other pertinent information.

  • Call for Papers. ASA provides individuals an opportunity to present their research at a national level at ASA's Annual Meeting. The annual Call for Papers alerts members of this opportunity.

  • ASA's Annual Meeting. Here is an opportunity to meet leaders in the field, learn more about sociology and cutting-edge research at our sessions and seminars, meet potential employers/employees at our employment service, and receive peer recognition for your research by presenting a paper or poster.

  • Publications. ASA's hundreds of publications provide information about curriculum development, department management, teaching techniques, careers in sociology, handling the job market, sociology departments, etc.

  • JSTOR. Only members of ASA have access to JSTOR, which is a database of ASA's journals from the inaugural year to the last volume published up to five years ago. Here is another opportunity to increase your knowledge and research resources with access to these journals.

How to Become a Student Member of ASA

Students can become members of the ASA by the following:

  1. Completing a membership application and sending/faxing it to ASA.
  2. Joining online at http://www.asanet.org/members/membership.html and filling in an online form.
  3. Calling ASA at 202-383-9005 ext. 389, Monday-Friday, 9 AM to 5 PM ET.

How Much Is Student Membership?

Student membership dues are $16, AND the student must purchase a journal subscription. Most of the journal subscriptions are $20, except one is $35.

Membership runs on a calendar year only-from January 1 to December 31. Membership dues are not pro-rated.

The Honors Program

The Honors Program provides undergraduate sociology students a rich introduction to the professional life of the discipline. Exceptional sociology students from throughout the country and the world come together for four days and experience all facets of the ASA annual meetings. By participating in the Honors Program, students develop long-lasting networks with other aspiring sociologists while their sponsoring departments have a chance to "showcase" their own quality programs and their most outstanding students.

At the 2005 ASA annual meetings in Philadelphia, Honors Program students will:

  • Attend a special Honors Program Reception and other events where they interact with other undergraduate sociology students;
  • Participate in an Honors Roundtable session as well as ASA events including ASA First-Timers' Welcoming Party, Department Alumni Night, and regular paper sessions and roundtables;
  • Learn all about the activities, sections, and governance of the ASA;
  • Meet and talk with sociologists representing graduate programs around the country; and
  • Attend "Conversations With ... " sessions with prominent sociologists that are reserved for Honors Program students only.

Participation in the ASA Honors Program is possible through a competitive application process each year. See the Honors Program webpage for information on application deadline, fee, and decision date.

The Minority Fellowship Program

Through its Minority Fellowship Program (MFP), ASA supports the development and training of minority sociologists interested in issues of mental health. Funded by a grant from the National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH), the MFP seeks to attract talented minority students who are interested in the social dimensions of mental health issues, and to facilitate their placement, work, and success in appropriate graduate programs. For more information, contact 202-383-9005, ext. 322; e-mail: minority.affairs@asanet.org.

Department Subsidized Memberships

The beginning of the academic year is a good time to introduce students to a national professional association that can help them throughout their career.

To encourage students to join ASA as an integral part of their career development, ASA collaborates with departments to help students join ASA for the first time. With a minimum of five first-time student members “bundled” by your department, ASA will send each student a free copy of the ASA Style Guide (a $5 value). Departments are asked to subsidize what they can (in this past, this has ranged from a $5 departmental contribution to a full-subsidy of the cost of student membership), and students pay the remainder. Students should complete an application and attach a check for their portion of the dues. The department should cut one check for the department’s contribution for the number of students responding. Note that in addition to the $16 student membership dues, each student must select at least one ASA journal. The combined payment received must include payment for both dues and journals. Style Guide offer applies to new student members only. Bundle all the forms and checks into one envelope and mail to ASA, Attn.: Membership Manager, with a note stating that this is a department package. The forms and checks must come in together. Shortly after receiving your student applications, ASA will ship a complimentary copy of the ASA Style Guide to each member included in your package of applications.
