This table shows that over 80 percent of all 2004 ASA regular and associate (non-student) members were employed in colleges or universities.Over 85 percent of those with doctorates held these academic positions, compared to 40 percent of those without a PhD.The proportion of non-PhD members employed outside the academy was more than 3 times greater than for members with a doctorate (61 and 15 percent, respectively).The 15 percent of PhD members employed outside education is half of that reported by the National Science Foundation for 2001 (see related table).This suggests that ASA members are more likely than their non-member colleagues to belong to a professional association for sociologists.
