Doctorate Recipients by Race Ethnicity in Selected Disciplines

This series of charts shows the gradual increase in minorities that earned doctorates in social science disciplines over the last two decades. In 2000, sociology had the highest share of African Americans earning doctorates, although not the highest number. As of 2000, economics had the highest percentage of Asian Americans earning doctorates in these disciplines and psychology had the highest share of Hispanics (although the numbers are still extremely small). The year 2006, for the most part, continues these trends.
