Two Films Commemorate ASA Centennial
Commemoration of ASA's Centennial year will include premieres of two documentary films at the Annual Meeting in Philadelphia.  Each film was specially developed to celebrate the contributions of sociology to our understanding of social life in America.

A Century of Progress: Presidential Reflections
This 20-minute film begins with a brief overview of the founding of the American Sociological Society (ASA's pre-1959 name, acknowledging the organizations inclusion of applied, action-oriented social reformers as well as pure-theoretical-academic scholars. The documentary continues with a review of each of the successive presidents of the Society.

Lester F. Ward:  A Life's Journey
This 110-minute film describes in detail the life and ideas of Lester F. Ward -- a man regarded by many as the founder of American Sociology and also the first president of the American Sociology Society.

Landmarks in Sociology - a session co-sponsored with the ASA Section on the History of Sociology.
On Tuesday, August 16 from 8:30 am - 10:10 am in the Philadelphia Marriott the session on Landmarks in Sociology will examine four topics:  The Other Webber Classic; Parsons at Pennsylvania; Why Read Schumpeter?; Sorokin and Mills:  Marginals at Elite Universities. 

Centennial Session:  History of American Sociology.
On Saturday, August 13, from 8:30 am - 10:10 am in the Philadelphia Marriott, the Section on the History of Sociology will sponsor a session on the History of American Sociology.    Under the direction of Stephen Turner, members will examine:  Beginnings of U.S. Pragmatism, Sociology, and Empire: Dewey, Mead, and the Philippine Problem, 1900-1930s; The Rise of Homans at Harvard: Pareto and the English Villagers; Merton's Intellectual Legacy: Influences from Merton; Towards a Theory of the Talking Class.
