Statement of the American Sociological Association
Regarding the April 16, 2007, Tragic Events at Virginia Tech University

April 18, 2007

On behalf of the American Sociological Association, the ASA Council expresses its deepest sorrow regarding the tragic events of April 16 at Virginia Tech University. The ASA leadership, members, and staff offer their condolences and sympathy to the entire Virginia Tech community and especially to the friends, relatives, and acquaintances of those killed and injured. This tragedy evokes overwhelming sadness by our entire nation, as it is truly a national tragedy.

The Association is grateful for the efforts of the leaders and staff of the university. We acknowledge with respect the work of the local community emergency, medical, and health services, as well as law enforcement, who responded to this catastrophe.

Further details about these events will emerge, and questions will be answered in the coming months, but the many community and social implications of such violent acts will continue to require examination through rigorous teaching, research, and scholarship. As sociologists we offer our long tradition of scientific work to promote greater public understanding of such human events and to assist community efforts to confront trauma and healing. As members of this nation and the world, we are committed to the prevention of such destructive events.
