What types of positions are listed in the Job Bank?

Positions in academia, sociological practice, applied sociology, fellowships, and post docs can all be found on the Job Bank. Most positions do require an advanced degree.

Who can see my profile on the Job Bank?

Any employer with an active listing on the Job Bank can view your submitted profile listing. You can also choose to have your profile withheld from employer resume searches.

How long will my profile be available to employers?

You can choose to have your profile available to employers for 30, 60, or 90 days. Once your profile expires, you can extend it for an additional 30, 60, or 90 days. You can also deactivate your listing at any time.

What kind of information can I include in my profile?

In addition to basic contact information, you can include your salary requirements, current title, and region preference. You can specify your preferred position/rank, and include up-to-three specialties or areas of expertise. You can upload your resume in a Word, PDF or text file, enter a link to a web page that has your resume, or paste your resume in a text box. There is also the option to upload two additional supporting documents, such as a writing sample, teaching evaluation, sample syllabi, etc.

How do I sign up for e-mail alerts from the Job Bank?

At this time, the Job Bank does not offer an e-mail notification service.

I do not want to receive e-mail notices regarding new job announcements. How can I unsubscribe to the e-mail list?

The e-mails from the ASA Job Bank are sent to the section listserv(s) you subscribe to. The only way to unsubscribe to the Job Bank e-mails would be to unsubscribe to the section listserv(s). If you feel you are receiving too many e-mails from the listserv, you can opt to receive a weekly digest. Digests package a week's worth of listserv messages packed into a single article. They are useful for reducing inbox clutter or if you don't have much time to read messages every day. Digests work for both Announcement and Discussion Listservs. If you want to set up digests on multiple lists, you will have to send commands for each one separately.

Here is what you need to do:

  1. Send a message to listserv@listserv.asanet.org
  2. Leave the subject area blank
  3. In the body of the message delete all signatures another other text (this confuses the listserv)
  4. Type (or copy) the following message SET LISTNAME NOHTML MIME DIGEST
  5. Replace LISTNAME with the name of the listserv you want to change. For example if your listserv is "SAMPLE-ANNOUNCE@LISTSERV.ASANET.ORG" then just use SAMPLE-ANNOUNCE. Do not add the @LISTSERV.ASANET.ORG part, that will confuse the system and will cause it to ignore your requests.
  6. Send the message
  7. You will receive an e-mail confirmation.

Many e-mail programs have the option to create a rule to file or delete e-mails based on content (e.g., the subject line used in Job Bank listserv announcements). For example, see instructions for creating rules using Outlook. Check with your e-mail service provider if you need additional assistance.

You cannot use an individual login to post a position. If you do not know your company or department login, please e-mail jobbank@asanet.org.

My chair is a member of the ASA. Can I use their ASA login to post a position?

No. You cannot use an individual login to post your position to the ASA Job Bank. You must use a company or department login. If you do not know your company or department login, please e-mail jobbank@asanet.org.

How long will it take for a listing to be live on the Job Bank once it has been submitted?

Jobs ads are approved 24-48 hours after payment has been received. The ASA does not accept purchase orders for Job Bank fees.

I have posted my position but it is not listed on the Job Bank.  When will it go live on the site?

You must submit payment before your listing can be active on the Job Bank. Job Bank fees can be paid online with a credit card or you can print an invoice and mail it to the ASA with a check or credit card information.

Can I make changes to my listing once it has been submitted?

Yes. Once you have submitted your listing, you can make changes by logging in to the Job Bank and selecting the position you wish to edit. The ad will then appear as it did when you originally entered it on the Job Bank. Make sure you click the Submit Changes button at the bottom of the page to save your changes.

How can I have my listing distributed to ASA section listservs?

When you post your job in the ASA Job Bank, you will be able to select up to two ASA Section listservs to have your job distributed to at no additional fee. When you enter your job in the Job Bank, you will notice two drop-down fields. All ASA Sections are listed; you may select up to two. Once your job is activated, an e-mail will be sent to the selected section listservs with the job ID, institution, department, job title, position/rank, and areas/special programs and a link to the Job Bank for full information about the listing.

If you would like your listing distributed to additional sections, you must contact those sections directly. You can find a list of sections here. Only jobs that are posted in the ASA Job Bank may be distributed via section listservs.

What is ASA’s discrimination policy for posting listings on the ASA Job Bank?

The ASA does not knowingly accept postings from employers that, contrary to laws that apply to their institution, discriminate on the basis of sex, race, religion, national origin, age, sexual orientation, and gender identity or expression. ASA also strongly encourages all employers to abstain from such discrimination even if laws applicable to their institution permit it.

The ASA Job Bank wants to make your job known to our members. So that they can be informed of any forms of discrimination permitted by your institution, we require that employers placing ads answer a series of questions clarifying the institution’s discrimination policy. If any of the listed forms of discrimination are allowed by your institution, it will be noted under your job posting.
