Department Leaders Preconference

Department leaders at all types of academic institutions are invited to attend the ASA Department Leaders Preconference. Chairs, directors of graduate studies, and directors of undergraduate studies come together to learn about and share ideas on the challenges facing sociology departments, navigating the evolving landscape of higher education, and receiving practical support related to academic department leadership. Each year features a new agenda fitted to the concerns of sociology’s academic leaders at the time. Past years have featured speakers, discussions, and workshops on some of the following topics:

  • Connecting the Dots to Meaningful Employment Outcomes for Majors
  • Confronting Ethical Challenges in Graduate Education
  • Best Practices and Strategies for Hiring
  • Preparing for Program Review
  • Avoiding Burnout
  • Supporting At-Risk Students
