2015 05 – Position Announcement – The Max Planck Research Group Gender Gaps in Health and Survival, Statistical Analyst

The Max Planck Research Group Gender Gaps in Health and Survival at the Max Planck Institute for Demographic Research (MPIDR) is accepting applications for a highly qualified Statistical Analyst.

Men die, women suffer: that is what is called the male - female health - survival paradox. The group intends to investigate how universal the male – female health – survival paradox is across different countries and which biological, demographic, and social factors drive the male – female health – survival paradox. The research interests of the group also embrace health trends in the old-aged populations, cohort differences in health at older ages and related topics.

Required qualifications: background in statistics, biostatistics, mathematics, or applied disciplines with strong quantitative skills and experience with longitudinal data analysis, survival analysis, multilevel models and experience in using statistical software (e.g. Stata, R).

Preferred qualifications: experience in analyzing individual-level data, working with large datasets, analyzing health related data, and experience in management of missing data.

The Department of Sociology at The Pennsylvania State University, University Park campus, invites applications for a full-time academic position to lead an online Masters of Professional Studies (MPS) in Applied Demography and to teach online classes beginning as soon as the position is filled.

The ideal candidate will have a degree in Sociology, Demography, or related discipline. A Ph.D. by time of appointment is required and previous teaching experience, including online instruction, at a university level is preferred.  In addition, candidates should indicate their ability to coordinate hiring, supervision, and evaluation of instructors, to effectively communicate with diverse audiences, and to engage in planning and strategy development. The successful candidate will share with others involved a vision for a rigorous academic program development grounded by practical applications.  Responsibilities include developing and teaching online courses, serving as liaison to other units in the University, and coordinating program staffing, admissions, and student advising. Oversee and participate in major research projects on Boston’s population; prepare research reports, maintain databases and perform statistical analysis. Initiate, and manage the development of demographic models. The Demographer will help plan, design and develop strategy and methodology of demographic research; may originate study concept or develop topic in response to request from Director. 2015 04 – Postdoctoral Position Announcement – The Center on Poverty and Social Policy, Columbia University

The Center on Poverty and Social Policy, at the Columbia University School of Social Work, is seeking a postdoctoral research scholar with a PhD in economics, public policy, social work, sociology or a related discipline for a project on national and state trends in poverty. The postdoc will work with faculty and researchers to conduct new analyses of national and state trends in poverty using an improved measure of poverty based on the supplemental poverty measure (SPM) recently developed by the United States Census Bureau and the Bureau of Labor Statistics. The project will consider key sub-groups as well as the overall population, and will also gather and take into account data on state-level policies and cost-of-living. The postdoctoral fellowship is for one year, with the option to renew for a second year contingent on performance and funding.

2015 03 - Administrator Position – US Census Bureau Research Data Center, Penn State University

A position for an Administrator at the Pennsylvania State University Census Bureau Research Data Center (RDC), University Park, PA, will be filled in spring 2015. The RDC is a secure computing lab in Paterno Library on the University Park campus. In this lab, researchers who have received approval for research projects have access to restricted demographic, economic, and health data collected by the U.S. Census Bureau, the National Center for Health Statistics, and the Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality. The Administrator will work on site at the Penn State RDC and is crucial to the daily operation of the RDC.

The person in this position will assist researchers from many disciplines, including economics, geography, health policy, sociology, and demography who are conducting research projects in the RDC. The main duties of the Administrator are to serve as a liaison between the Census Bureau and PSU with responsibilities in the following areas:

(a) helping PSU researchers develop successful proposals for RDC based research projects,

(b) overseeing the daily operation of the RDC secure lab,

(c) coordinating with the Census Bureau on matters relating to the RDC secure lab and research projects being conducted in the lab,

(d) helping researchers with disclosure avoidance statements, and

(e) a range of other administrative responsibilities.

The position will be full-time. The candidate should have a Master’s degree in economics, demography, sociology, or a related social science field. Familiarity with social science research methodology and experience with census data is desirable. 2015 03 -  Job Announcements – Department of Sociology, University of Iowa

The Department of Sociology at the University of Iowa seeks applicants for a full-time, three-year renewable lecture position to teach introduction to sociology, social problems, and specialty courses depending on the expertise of the faculty member hired.  We would be particularly interested in candidates who could teach courses on family, gender, organizations or economic sociology.  This position will be an integral part of the Department’s efforts to expand our offerings and we seek a candidate who is an enthusiastic and effective teacher.  A PhD in Sociology is required.   Prior teaching experience is highly desirable. The teaching load is three courses per semester.  The initial position is a 3-year renewable appointment, and there is the possibility for renewal for another three year term.  After six years, lecturers can be considered for advancement to the title of senior lecturer.  Starting salary is commensurate with experience, with a minimum of $48,000. The position will begin in August 2015; the appointment requires that a Ph.D. be received by start of the appointment.

Subsequent annual renewal is possible on a fiscal year basis (July 1-June 30) for up to four years contingent upon performance, the needs of the center and university, and the availability of resources. 2014 12 – Call for Applications – UC Davis, Visiting Graduate Student Scholars

The Center for Poverty Research at UC Davis seeks applications from graduate students who are interested in visiting the Center in order to expand their understanding of the causes and consequences of poverty. The Center anticipates hosting up to four graduate students during fall quarter 2015.

We seek applications from Ph.D. students in a variety of disciplines, including economics, psychology, sociology, social work, public policy and graduate schools of law and education, with research interests in our core research areas:

  • Labor markets and poverty
  • The non-cash safety net, broadly construed to include education and health policies
  • Children and the intergenerational transmission of poverty
  • Immigration and poverty, especially in connection with the above three areas

Visiting graduate student scholars will be expected to participate in our graduate course on poverty and public policy?, our graduate student retreat, attend poverty related seminars and conferences, and engage with faculty to develop poverty related research ideas. Graduate Scholars are matched with both a faculty affiliate of the Center and a current graduate student. They will also be asked to write a policy brief that will subsequently be disseminated through the Center’s website, and will receive a stipend of $8,000 to cover living expenses while in Davis

2014 12 – Job Announcement – Department of Sociology, Concordia College

The Concordia College (Moorhead MN) Sociology Department seeks applications for a full-time, tenure eligible position at the rank of assistant professor. 2014 12 – Postdoctoral Position Announcement – UT Austin Population Research Center, NICHD-funded postdoc

The Population Research Center (PRC) at The University of Texas at Austin will have one opening for NICHD-funded postdoctoral position starting September 1, 2015.  This position is for one year, but is potentially renewable for a second year. The PRC is an interdisciplinary research and training unit of The University of Texas at Austin (UT) that provides infrastructure support services and project development support for a very productive, interdisciplinary group of faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students at UT. Most of the research is concentrated in four overlapping and reinforcing thematic areas: Health disparities, Educational Inequality & Opportunity, Partnership, Parenting, & Human Development, and Work and Stratification.

As part of a research unit with a strong culture of collaboration, postdocs are expected to spend about half of their time working independently and about half of their time working together with research associates.  We strongly encourage potential applicants to contact research associates to discuss collective interests prior to submitting an application.  In addition, postdocs are expected to regularly attend the weekly PRC brownbag, present at least once at the brownbag during their period of support, and submit research for presentation at the Population Association (PAA) meetings.  Postdoctoral fellows must have a Ph.D. in sociology, demography, public health, family studies or a related social science discipline and be citizens, or Permanent Residents, of the United States at the time of appointment. 2014 11 – NIA and NICHD Postdoctoral Fellowships – University of Michigan, Population Studies Center

The Population Studies Center expects to have openings for postdoctoral fellows sponsored by National Institute on Aging (NIA) and The Eunice Kennedy Shriver National Institute of Child Health and Human Development (NICHD).   Positions to start on or about September 2, 2015. Applicants must have a Ph.D. in demography, public health, or one of the social sciences (e.g., sociology, economics, psychology) at the starting date.

For applicants for the NIA positions, a background in aging is desirable but not required; however, it is imperative that a significant portion of your proposed research be aging-related.  Applicants for the NICHD positions should focus on population research. Applicants should indicate for which position(s) they are applying.  Selection will be based on scholarly potential and compatibility with the interests of a faculty mentor. Fellows devote most of their time to independent research, but may also take selected courses and/or teach on a light-load basis. Positions offer exceptional opportunity for collaboration with staff of the Population Studies Center and Survey Research Center on major projects in the U.S. and overseas.

2014 10 - Job Opening – Department of Policy Analysis and Management, Cornell University

The Department of Policy Analysis and Management in the College of Human Ecology at Cornell University is seeking to hire a faculty member in Demography and Public Policy. Rank is open. 2104 09 - Predoctoral Fellowship – Columbia University

The Department of Sociomedical Sciences at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health will offer a Predoctoral Fellowship in Gender, Sexuality and Health to a PhD applicant entering in the fall of 2015.

This fellowship is funded by a training grant award from the National Institute of Child Health and Development, Population Dynamics Branch.  Fellowships cover tuition and stipend and include monies for professional meeting travel and academic supplies.  Funding is guaranteed up to five years (although students will be encouraged to seek outside funding for their dissertation research).

The Congressional Research Service (CRS) is seeking expressions of interest for a short-term opportunity using contract mechanisms (up to one year, beginning as early as October 1) to serve as an Immigration Analyst.  The ideal candidate is an experienced policy analyst who has a breadth of knowledge in a range of immigration subjects, including asylum, comprehensive immigration reform options, diversity visas, employment-based immigration (permanent & temporary high-skilled workers), grounds of inadmissibility & exclusion, noncitizen eligibility for public assistance, nonimmigrant visa overstays, numerical limits and visa backlogs, point systems for selecting immigrants, Temporary Protect Status & other forms of blanket relief from removal, and visa issuance & security policy.

The position requires the ability to utilize analytical methods and techniques to analyze policy issues for the U.S. Congress. The individual should be comfortable with quantitative approaches in research in the social sciences. Strong analytic writing skills, including the ability to synthesize complex analyses into easy-to-understand language for a non-technical audience are required.

2014 09 - Job Opening – Departments of Geography and Sociology/Anthropology, Ohio University

The Ohio University Departments of Geography and Sociology/Anthropology invite applications for a tenure-track Assistant Professor of Rural Development, with specialization in the areas of poverty and/or inequality and related expertise in community, development, or environmental sustainability, beginning in fall of 2015. A focus on the Appalachian region is strongly preferred, though we will welcome applications from candidates whose research focuses on other rural geographic areas within the U.S. Methodological expertise may include qualitative, quantitative, or spatial analytical methods. The successful candidate should conduct research that is theoretically innovative and empirically grounded, and be committed to teaching excellence at the undergraduate and graduate levels. This position will contribute to the new interdisciplinary curriculum theme on Wealth and Poverty in the College of Arts and Sciences.
