The Department of Agricultural Economics, Sociology, and Education, College of Agricultural Sciences, seeks applicants with expertise in spatial data methods to fill a tenure track appointment at the advanced Assistant or Associate Professor level. The position is co-funded with Penn State’s Social Science Research Institute (SSRI) and Population Research Institute (PRI). This is a 9-month, full-time appointment with half-time administrative responsibilities as Director of Penn State’s Geographic Information Analysis (GIA) Core, and half-time research, teaching, and service responsibilities in Rural Sociology. The formal appointment will be 20% service/administration, 65% research, and 15% teaching. Supplemental salary will be made available to support administrative responsibilities during the summer months. As Assistant/Associate Professor of Rural Sociology, the incumbent would be expected to pursue a nationally recognized and externally funded research program that draws on expertise in spatial data gathering, management, analysis, and modeling to explore social scientific problems, teach one course per year, and advise graduate and undergraduate students. While research foci are open, preferred candidates will contribute to one or more of the signature themes of the Rural Sociology program – agriculture and food systems; natural resources and environment; community and international development; rural social demography. Specific course offerings are negotiable but will ideally draw on the incumbent’s substantive interests and methodological expertise to fill needs within the Rural Sociology and Demography graduate programs, and the Community, Environment and Development undergraduate program. As Director of the GIA Core, the incumbent would be expected to provide administrative and scientific oversight of Core activities, to assist in the Core’s research activities when necessary, and to help build the intellectual capacity in GIS and spatial methods in the social sciences at Penn State. Activities will include, but not be limited to, increasing the disciplinary breadth of Core activities by networking with relevant units on campus; leading and contributing to the development of research grant proposals that incorporate geospatial data and spatial methods in addressing complex social problems; leading and contributing to research papers and publications; and developing new methods and/or instructional resources for advanced spatial analysis.

1.) The Population Research Center (PRC) at The University of Texas at Austin will have one opening for NICHD-funded postdoctoral position starting September 1, 2014. This position is for one year, but is potentially renewable for a second year. The PRC is an interdisciplinary research and training unit of The University of Texas at Austin (UT) that provides infrastructure support services and project development support for a very productive, interdisciplinary group of faculty, postdocs, graduate students, and undergraduate students at UT. Most of the research is concentrated in four overlapping and reinforcing thematic areas: Health disparities, Educational Inequality & Opportunity, Partnership, Parenting, & Human Development, and Work and Stratification.
As part of a research unit with a strong culture of collaboration, postdocs are expected to spend about half of their time working independently and about half of their time working together with research associates. POSITION DESCRIPTION: The University of Texas at El Paso is seeking a social scientist as a strategic hire in the area of quantitative methodology at the rank of Associate Professor (higher rank considered). A scholar capable of catalyzing funded collaborative research on campus is desired. Potential substantive research areas could include health and well-being, environment, social networks, borders, migration, Latinas/os, work/poverty/economic development, human security, and human rights. Quantitative methods of particular interest are (a) demography, (b) network analysis, (c) multilevel or hierarchical linear modeling, (d) structural equation modeling, (e) event history or longitudinal analysis, and/or (f) systems dynamic modeling. The Population Research Institute (PRI) at The Pennsylvania State University anticipates an opening for a postdoctoral fellow in the NICHD-supported Family Demography and Individual Development training program, starting on or about August 15, 2014. The training program is oriented toward a postdoctoral research apprenticeship in two areas: family demography, and life course development processes and outcomes. CIQLE is one of four research centers in the Department of Sociology at Yale University. The center hosts a weekly seminar, thematic conferences, and regular methods workshops. It also hosts senior and junior visiting scholars from the US and overseas. Indiana University, Bloomington is pleased to accept applications for two Postdoctoral Fellowships for scholars in a broad range of fields, including African American and African Diaspora Studies, American Studies (includes Native American Studies), Anthropology, History, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology. Postdoctoral fellows are an important component of the intellectual life of CRRES. The CRRES fellowship program aims to create a legacy of qualified scholars who will be positioned to address the broad issue of race and ethnicity in the United States using a multidisciplinary lens. These fellowships are designed to nurture the academic careers of scholars by allowing them the opportunity to pursue their research while gaining mentored experience as teachers, CRRES fellows, and members of the faculty in host departments. We are looking for self-motivated and highly-organized individuals who can work independently and as members of a team.
