Each year, ASA recognizes a wide range of contributions to the discipline of sociology. ASA acknowledges and honors individuals’ outstanding work in scholarship, teaching, practice, and public understanding of sociology.

Cox-Johnson-Frazier Award
This award honors the intellectual tradition of Oliver Cox, Charles S. Johnson, and E. Franklin Frazier, who placed their scholarship in service to social justice with an eye toward advancing the status of disadvantaged populations. Their scholarship was not limited to just the gathering of more data, but it was about attempting to better conditions globally.
Dissertation Award
This award honors the best PhD dissertation from among those submitted by advisors and mentors in the discipline.
Distinguished Career Award for the Practice of Sociology
This award honors outstanding contributions to sociological practice with work that has served as a model for the work of others; that has elevated the professional status or public image of the field; or that has been widely recognized for its significant impacts, particularly in advancing human welfare.
Distinguished Contributions to Teaching Award
Recognizing outstanding contributions to the teaching and scholarship of teaching in sociology, this award honors individuals who have made a significant impact on the manner in which sociology is taught at a regional, state, national, or international level.
Distinguished Scholarly Book Award
This award is presented for the best book or monograph published in the two preceding years.
Jessie Bernard Award
Given in recognition of scholarly work inclusive of research, teaching, mentoring, and service that has enlarged the horizons of sociology to encompass fully the role of women in society, this award is presented for significant cumulative work done throughout a professional career that demonstrates broad scholarly impact.
Public Understanding of Sociology Award
This award honors individuals who have made exemplary contributions to advancing the public understanding of sociology, sociological research, and scholarship among the general public.
W.E.B. Du Bois Career of Distinguished Scholarship Award
Honoring outstanding commitment to the profession of sociology, this award recognizes scholars whose cumulative work has contributed in important ways to the advancement of the discipline.
Sorokin Lecture Grant
Grant funding is available to host an ASA award winner for a lecture at a sociological meeting or on an academic campus.
