About the Chairs Conference

New and current chairs at all types of academic institutions are invited to attend the ASA Department Chairs Conference. Topics rotate annually and may include everything from budget management to conflict resolution to the PhD job market. The Conference is held the day prior to the start of the Annual Meeting.

 

2013 Department Chairs Conference

Theme:  Interrogating Inequality in Sociology Departments: Identifying Disparities, Ensuring Fair Operating Procedures, Creating a Culture of Inclusion

Concept:

As sociologists, we are used to studying and teaching about inequality in social arrangements.  We easily ask questions about the conditions of inequality in society, the causes of inequality, and the impact of inequality.  However, only rarely do we have the time and space to thoughtfully consider the application of this core sociological concept to our own professional milieu.  

This year the ASA Department Chairs Conference will take up the challenge offered by the Annual Meeting theme, “Interrogating Inequality,” and use it to think about our own departments.  Cecilia L. Ridgeway, 2013 ASA President, will be the opening keynote speaker, offering her thoughts on how inequality impacts departments of sociology and possible approaches to overcoming disparities, ensuring fair procedures, and building a culture of inclusion. 

In addition to plenary presentations, the conference will also include three sessions of concurrent roundtables.  Each roundtable will address the general theme as applied to a practical concern, including: strains between full time and contingent faculty, promotion and tenure policies and procedures; minority and first-generation student issues, raising the profile of small departments vis a vis large and better resourced departments, and establishing links between the major and employment.  We will also be thinking about linking the micro and macro by examining how national trends in higher education are impacting sociology departments, including discussions of online and hybrid courses and MOOCS and their impact on sociology departments.  Topics regarding basic department management will also be covered, including issues such as budgeting and assessment.

Roundtable topics are strategically scheduled to allow Chairs from the full range of academic institutions—from PhD-granting to BA-liberal arts—to find topics in each session that respond to their context.

Year after year, Department Chairs Conference evaluations indicate that this pre-Annual Meeting event offers a unique opportunity for sociology department leaders to talk with their counterparts in similar departments facing similar challenges, and a valued source of strategic insight and professional renewal.  

Preregistration and fee payments are required.  Chair Conference attendees must preregister for the Annual Meeting in order to register for this conference.  Fees for the Chair Conference are for Chairs of Department Affiliates and for chairs from non-Affiliate departments.  The Chair Conference fee includes all Chair Conference materials, continental breakfast and lunch.
